If you’ve just adopted a new pet, you may be wondering how you should introduce him or her to the rest of the family. Although this sounds and can be overwhelming, there are a number of things you can do to prepare.

Here are some tips on how to introduce a new pet to the family:

  1. Try introducing your pet to the family before you bring it home. Introducing your pet to your children or any pets you may already have prior to adopting or purchasing it is the most ideal scenario. This way, you can make sure that everyone gets along well before bringing your pet home.
  2. Introduce a new pet to the family on neutral grounds. Dogs, in particular, tend to be very territorial of their homes. Rather than causing any dogs you have to feel threatened about a new pet entering their territory, introduce them outdoors. Each dog should have a leash and a handler. Once you can see if they’ll get along, they can be let off their leashes.
  3. Keep a close eye on pets and children. Once the new pet is indoors with your family, be sure to keep a close eye on them around your other pets and children for the first few days. Monitor for any signs of aggression. If your new pet doesn’t seem to mesh well with the rest of the family, it might not be a good fit for your home. However, some adjustment should be expected and it’s normal for new pets to be standoffish with one another at first.

These are just some tips on how to introduce a new pet to the family. Are there more you can think of to add to the list?

    • Thanks for great post, I think the first point about introducing the pet to the family is a very important one, especially for kids! We are on the fence on whether to get our daughter (she is 3) a cat or a dog, I grew up with dogs and know they are great fun for kids but she seems to have her heart set on a cat!

      • It can be a toss-up for a furry friend. If you introduce a kitten, they can bond together and really help the kids get through that awkward tween time. Pets don’t give you the drama, judgments, Etc that other children can. My daughter is 11 now and I see how her cat follows her, and even will wait looking out the front window for her to come home.
