What are Cocoa Bombs?
Cocoa bombs, also known as hot cocoa bombs, hot chocolate balls, or hot chocolate bombs, are delightful and interactive confections that add a touch of magic to your hot chocolate mix experience. These spherical treats are typically made from chocolate, and they contain all the ingredients you need for a cozy cup of hot cocoa.
When you pour hot milk or water over the cocoa bomb, it melts and “explodes,” releasing a flurry of cocoa mix, marshmallows, and other goodies that dissolve into the liquid to create a rich and flavorful cup of hot chocolate.
Cocoa bombs often come in various flavors, such as classic chocolate, peppermint, caramel, and even fun variations like the Grinch-themed cocoa bombs you mentioned earlier. They’re not only delicious but also visually appealing, making them a popular choice for holiday treats, special occasions, or simply when you want to enjoy a unique and indulgent hot chocolate experience.
Our Hot Chocolate Bomb recipe makes 8-10 Hot Cocoa Bombs
What you need
Here is what you need to make these delicious hot chocolate bombs:
- 2 Silicone Sphere Molds
- 1 lb of Dark Green Candy Melts
- 2 C Mint Chocolate Hot Cocoa Powder
- 8-10 Nerdy Nummies Red Candy Hearts
- 1 disposable piping bag
- 1 cookie sheet fitted with wax paper
- 2 C Mini Marshmallows
- 1 C Bright Colorful Sprinkles
Directions
This part is 100% optional and a personal choice, I am not saying it is the best way to do this, it is what works for me.
Cut the silicone molds so that each sphere mold is by itself as shown in the IP image. I did this because I felt it was easier to control the mold when working with the melted chocolate.
Use a paper towel or clean kitchen towel and wipe the inside of the silicone molds. This will allow your chocolate mold to have a shiny coat on it. You could the double boiler method but I prefer the microwave instead for the ease of speed and clen up.
Using a heat-safe bowl, pour the dark green candy melts into the bowl and place in the microwave for 45-second intervals. Make sure to stir the candy melts after every 45 seconds until completely melted and smooth.
Using a spoon, spoon about 1-2 tbsp of the melted candy melts into the mold. Carefully swirl the melted candy melts to completely coat the inside of the mold. I use the back of the spoon to spread it out.
Lightly shake the extra candy melts back into the bowl. Place the coated molds into the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
Remove from the fridge and gently peel the silicone mold back away from the hardened candy melt.
Carefully place the molded chocolate shell onto a cutting board.
Repeat the steps with the remaining shells.
You should now have 8 half-sphere molded chocolate shells. Scoop some of the melted candy melt into the piping bag and cut the tip.
Building the cocoa bomb:
I set an empty shell on a small plate or on a piece of parchment paper and then scoop about 1 tbsp of the hot cocoa powder mix into the bottom of the sphere mold.
Sprinkle in a pinch of the sprinkles. Sprinkle in a few of the mini marshmallows.
Pipe a line of the melted candy melt around the edge of the bottom shell.
Carefully place the top shell onto the bottom and gently hold the top to the bottom for about 30 seconds to a minute to allow the piped candy melts to harden to the top shell.
Carefully pick up the bomb and make sure that there is no opening around the center of the shells.
Place the mold back onto the cutting board. Drizzle the melted candy over the bomb.
Place a heart into the center and allow it to harden for 10 minutes.
How to use your Cocoa Bombs to make the perfect cup of hot chocolate
Here’s how you can use cocoa bombs:
1. Gather Your Supplies:
You’ll need a cocoa bomb, your favorite mug, and hot milk or water.
2. Prepare Your Mug:
Choose a heat-resistant mug that’s large enough to fit the cocoa bomb and have space for the liquid.
3. Heat the Milk or Water:
Warm your milk or water in a separate container. It should be hot but not boiling.
4. Place the Cocoa Bomb in the Mug:
Carefully place the cocoa bomb into the center of the mug.
5. Pour the Hot Liquid:
Slowly pour the hot milk or hot water over the cocoa bomb. As the liquid makes contact with the bomb, it will begin to melt the chocolate shell and release the cocoa mix and marshmallows inside.
6. Watch the Magic:
As the cocoa bomb melts, you’ll see it open up, and the cocoa mix and marshmallows will start to mix with the liquid, creating a rich and flavorful hot chocolate.
7. Stir and Enjoy:
Once the cocoa bomb has fully dissolved and the ingredients are well combined, give the hot chocolate a good stir to ensure everything is evenly mixed.
8. Optional Toppings:
If desired, you can top your hot chocolate with whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or any other toppings of your choice.
9. Sip and Savor:
Now, all that’s left to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy your delightful cup of hot chocolate!
Remember, cocoa bombs can be quite mesmerizing to watch as they melt and reveal their hidden treasures, so take a moment to appreciate the magic before indulging in your delicious creation.
